The American Dance Abroad Legacy is an online repository to capture the global
accomplishments, processes, and knowledge amassed over the last two decades. Content, as it
is finalized, will be added here to meticulously document the diverse programs initiated by
American Dance Abroad, encompassing participant details, research materials, a bibliography
featuring publications by American Dance Abroad, and organizational resources. Our aspiration
is to expand this repository over time, incorporating additional materials and research
pertaining to international initiatives by other individuals and organizations. We encourage
submissions for potential inclusion.
Our hope is that future colleagues will continue to champion the cause, exploring innovative
avenues to advance the global reach of American dance.
Legacy Overview
American Dance Abroad operated from 2011-2024 as a national organization that sought
equitable cultural engagement among American dance artists and companies and their
international counterparts. It facilitated introductions and created opportunities for artistic
discovery and dialogue. Founded by Carolelinda Dickey and Andrea Snyder, American Dance
abroad was created as a tactical response to the decline of American dance in the global
marketplace, as outlined in Dance America: An International Strategy for American Dance, co-
authored by Dickey and Snyder in 2009.
Acknowledging that international dance had a broad presence in the United States, American
Dance Abroad’s primary mandate was to expand international visibility for American dance,
fostering parity by increasing opportunities for individual artists and companies. ADA helped
artists and companies enter and navigate the global marketplace where they could build their
own long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.
American Dance Abroad promoted American dance at global marketplaces, festivals, and
international gatherings.
American Dance Abroad provided support and resources to help dance professionals establish
and strengthen relationships with foreign colleagues.
American Dance Abroad also provided support and resources to enable foreign colleagues to
experience American dance.
ADA’s ongoing projects included:
– The American Corner
– Rapid Response
– Beyond Our Borders
– American Dance Recon (ADR)
